Zhong Biao’s ingenious use of design elements and his deep concern about issues in the urban environment give his works a unique look. With much subtlety, his works often reveal the relationship between the city and its dwellers. His Pop Art-like paintings are filled with contrasts and ironies. Juxtaposed human figures and objects drawn from different ages and places assume a curious sense of order in the chaotic universe that Zhong Biao constructs.

For this Biennale, the artist presents three pieces entitled 1913, 2006 and 2148, indicating a sequence of specific times: the past, present and future. But one can hardly identify any clear lines delineating the three periods in the works. The artist mixes images from real life and imagination and past and present. For instance, he uses images of the Shanghai Biennale poster hanging in the sky as a reference to the exhibition’s relationship to the city and people. The artist’s approach suggests that the present includes everything in the past, even things we no longer remember. In other words, today is the result of the past. In turn, the present will be included by the future and vice versa: the present moment holds the future and all things ahead as we look into the future. Indeed, all dreams start at the moment we cross temporal and spatial boundaries.
